It is sometimes important to look at how a chest of drawers is finished. One of the most commonly used finishes for wood is wax. Some people like the finish of wax, and do not want any kind of polishing of their furniture because it would look too shiny or glossed. However, others prefer to have their chest of drawers waxed, then polished and then coated with a second layer of wax. This is because the more layers you add, and the more the wood is buffed and re-coated, the lower the risk of scratches and dents and general wear and tear.
The great thing about pine is that it takes colour well, as it is easily stained. This leaves the surface rich in colour. A waxed pine chest of drawers can normally be used for children’s bedrooms or play rooms because of its low cost, but very durable nature. Pine is relatively inexpensive because it is a soft wood. Compared to other types of wood such as oak, it may not last for decades, but if it is used in a children’s bedroom, the child may grow out of the furniture. Therefore it is better not to spend excessive amounts for children’s furniture.
There are types of pine such as Scandinavian pine or yellow pine which do not corrode as easily as cheaper types of pine. These also are slightly more expensive but not as expensive as wood such as oak. The reason why they are more durable is that they grow more slowly in extreme cold conditions, thus making them more dense and resistant to damage.
Waxed pine chest of drawers can therefore add a layer of protection to a less durable wood, or if used as children’s furniture it can give a fairly plain and neutral finish for a simple bedroom theme. For more pine chest of drawers see our main chests category or tall pine chest of drawers.
